(Cincinnati) -- Mayor John Cranley this week proposed hiring officers from other departments, and increasing police overtime hours to deal with the city's rising homicide statistics.  Wednesday, City Council pledged to hire and train recruits later this year.

With eleven homicides so far in Cincinnati this year, the move comes at an critical time.  Acting City Manager Scott Stiles says the formation of a new gang unit, and extra overtime hours will allow police to beef up their response in "hot-spot" problem areas.  It will be paid for with a million dollars from the police budget.

Stiles says federal grants could help pay for a new recruit class.  Council will have to find the money for a recruit class of 60 officers when they work on the next budget. Wednesday vote did not commit the City to a recruit class, but rather showed the Council's commitment.

The Mayor also promised renewed support for the Cincinnati Intiative to Reduce Violence, (CIRV).
