Group Wants Support to Expand Streetcar

(Clifton Heights)--A grassroots streetcar organization, Believe in Cincinnati, is holding a Town Hall Meeting Tuesday night in an effort to generate interest in expanding the City’s streetcar track.

Phase one of the streetcar is still unfinished, but the group hopes to expand the line to Uptown, Northside, Walnut Hills, Westwood and Price Hill.

Dan Traicoff with Believe in Cincinnati says now is a perfect time to start talking about the future of the streetcar.  He says they can discuss the best possible routes, and how to cover construction and operating costs.  Traicoff says support for the streetcar has been growing, especially in neighborhoods where the line could eventually reach.

Supporters have long said the streetcar would help revitalize Downtown and Over-the-Rhine, and Traicoff says the benefits should be extended to other neighborhoods.

One of the biggest arguments against the streetcar has been how to pay for it.  And that question still looms.  Traicoff says if they can come up with a well-thought out plan to expand, they can win at least six votes on council, and possibly even the support of the mayor.

The meeting will be held at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center at 3711 Clifton Ave., at 6:30 p.m.
