(Walnut Hills) -- It was supposed to be a simple traffic stop, but a man is dead after an exchange of gunfire with police.

Around 1 AM, two officers stopped a car on Gilbert, near Dixmont, for an unspecified traffic violation.  There were at least three people in the vehicle, and according to the officers, two of them, a man and a woman got out of the car.

Chief Jeffery Blackwell says the man was combative, and struggled with the two officers.  Lt. Colonel James Whalen says the initial report is that officers used a Taser, to no effect, and at some point, the suspect produced a gun.  It's not clear who fired first, but the man was hit, and was pronounced dead at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.  The officers were not hurt.

Chief Blackwell says they have recovered the suspect's firearm, and will be reviewing cruiser cam video, as well as any security footage from the nearby Navy Reserve Center.

The suspect was "known to police", according to Chief Blackwell.  The driver was taken into custody.  The woman in the car escaped on foot.  Her name has not been released.

Blackwell says they plan to hold a press conference Tuesday afternoon to share more information.
