Mother Accused of Killing, Dumping Son Ruled Competent for Trial

( Butler County ) - The woman accused of killing her son and dumping his body in the Ohio River will be tried.

A judge on Monday ruled that 29-year-old Brittany Gosney is competent to stand trial. Gosney previously pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, and that plea is expected to be changed following a mental health evaluation.

Prosecutors say Gosney tried to abandon 6-year-old James Hutchinson and her other two children at Rush Run Wildlife in Preble County in late February. The child allegedly chased after her, grabbed the car door handle, and was fatally dragged. Gosney then allegedly went back and put her other two children and James' body back in her car and drove home. She allegedly dumped James' body in the Ohio River the next day, and his body has never been recovered.

42-Year-Old James Hamilton, Gosney's boyfriend, is facing charges related to the little boy's death as well.

Gosney's next court date is May 24.
