Geoff Hobson writes Marvin Lewsi says he's had talks with Mike Brown about a contract extension, and believes there will be one before training camp.
Joe Reedy has more of Marvin's comments from the NFL Combine, including talk of a contract extension for Andy Dalton.
With one year still remaining on their contracts, would you give a contract extension to Marvin Lewis and/or Andy Dalton? Comment below.
I don't get it. Why would the Bengals give either an extension? They are both under contract for 2014. Make each earn an extenson. Make Marvin prove he can win a playoff game. I like Marvin, I appreciate what he's done with the franchise. God bless the guy, he deserves major props for dealing with Mike Brown for 11 seasons, winning some battles and changing some franchise ways. He's the NFL's 2nd longest tenured coach, but he's a .500 coach (90-90-1).
Marvin's made the playoffs five times, but failed to win a playoff game each time. This franchise hasn't won a playoff game since 1990. At some point he has to take the next step with his team. That time has come. Why would this franchise be in the business of rewarding that? Demand more.
I'd say the same thing for Dalton. I like Dalton and I appreciate what he's done in his first three seasons. Heck, he's 1 of 5 NFL QB's to lead his team to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons. Yet, he's failed to deliver in all three playoff appearances. Dalton has to get better, he has to cut down his turnovers. Can he?,
I don't know. But I'm excited to find out what Hue Jackson's tweaked offense does for Dalton.
This is 'Roll the Dice' time for the Bengals, with both Marvin and Andy. What's the downside to making them actually play out the final year of their contract and earn a new one? Baltimore asked Joe Flacco to do it, he did, he won a Super Bowl, then the Ravens paid Flacco. What a concept.
Even if Dalton wins the Super Bowl this year, and I can't believe I just typed that, the Bengals could still franchise tag him for 2015, or try to reach a bigger deal.
Same for Marvin. Make Marvin take this franchise to the next level. If he does, if he wins the Super Bowl, then pay him. Yes, he'd be a lame duck coach for 2014, yes, the Bengals would have to bid against the rest of the NFL, yes, he might walk away. But after 11 seasons of not winning a playoff game, the Bengals must make that bet and take that chance. Like the NIKE slogan, 'Just Do It', make Marvin and Andy earn contract extensions. Making the playoffs can't be the equivalent of Super Bowls for this franchise. The fans deserve more.
