UC football schedule 2014
American Athletic Conference Mike Areaso has announced the league opponents and game sites for the 2014 University of Cincinnati football season. The Bearcats will face East Carolina, Houston, Memphis and USF at Paul Brown Stadium in downtown Cincinnati. The one-year move to PBS was necessary due to the start of the $86-million Nippert Stadium Renovation & Expansion Project. UC’s 2014 road matchups are against UConn, SMU, Temple and Tulane, sending the Bearcats to East Hartford, Conn., Dallas, Texas, Philadelphia, Pa. and New Orleans, La., respectively. The 2014 conference schedule will produce 44 regular-season games, with each of The American’s 11 teams playing eight intraconference contests. Each team will have four home games and four away games. East Carolina, Tulane and Tulsa all join The American for 2014. The 2014 schedule model was approved the league's athletic directors before the start of the 2013 season. The complete 2014 schedule will be announced at a later date.
CINCINNATI – Two University of Cincinnati football student-athletes, QB Munchie Legaux (New Orleans, La./Edna Karr) and WR Shaq Washington (Maple Hts., Ohio/Maple Hts.) received eligibility extension waivers from the American Athletic Conference office, the league announced Wednesday. Legaux will have one year of eligibility remaining while Washington will have two seasons left. Both applications for hardship waivers were approved in accordance with NCAA Bylaw 14.2.4. MORE
Derek Jeter to retire after 2014
Yankees SS Derek Jeter announced on Facebook that the 2014 season will be his last. Check out this flashback video (at 1-minute mark) of Jeter talking about thinking he was going to be drafted by the Reds with the 5th pick of the 1992 draft. Here are Jeter's career stats.
Today the Reds claimed off waivers from the Cubs RHP Brett Marshall (bio) and designated for assignment IF Henry Rodriguez. The Cubs had claimed Marshall from the Yankees in December. Marshall made his ML debut for the Yankees in 2013, appearing in 3 games during two stints.
Rodriguez, 24, was signed by the Reds as an amateur free agent in 2007. He appeared in nine games for the Reds in 2013 (1 for 9 .111), while hitting .274-4-41 at Louisville. In his career, he appeared in 21 ML games with the Reds (4 for 23 .174). His best season minor leauge season was 2011 when he hit .320-13-81 with 30 SB.

Pondering the offseason
SI issues final Winter Report Cards: Reds D-
The Reds’ quiet offseason has left the task of replacing outfielder Shin-Soo Choo and starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo to rookies Billy Hamilton and Skip Schumaker for the former and ace Johnny Cueto and second-year lefty Tony Cingrani for the latter.
Mark Sheldon writes Dusty Baker is keeping busy with no spring training.
Holmberg looks to join Reds' rotation.
Rose says PEDs worse than gambling.
MLB still working on home plate collision rule.
Steve Watkins (Cincinnati Business Courier) says the Reds could be adding these two features at GABP.
Xavier: Doing it with D and Dee
Final: Xavier 64 Butler 50

*Game wasn't as close as final score. XU led by 24, never trailed.
*XU made shots (53%), defended shots (34%) and passed well, 18 assists on 27 FGs.
*XU hit 6 of 13 3's, Butler just 7 of 25.
*XU held Butler to 22 1st half points and a season low 50 for the game.
*As Chris Mack said on 700 WLW, "we wanted to impose our will on them."
*Dee Davis dominated: 9 points, 9 assists/1 turnover. He held Kellen Dunham to 1 of 9 FG's and 2 points. Dunham came in averaging 17.4. His only FG was a rebound putback.
*That's back to back games XU's D had taken best opposing scorer out of game: Cotton/Dunham.
*XU is a different team when Jeff Martin plays well (9 points)
*Balance: Christon 15, Philmore 10, Martin 9, Davis 9.
*David West and Pacers teammates George Hill and Paul George were on hand to watch. Shannon Russell wrote about what West told the team.
Did you know?
From the Big East
The BIG EAST has six schools with a strength of schedule ranking of 36 or better.
Top 3: RPI/SOS
Others: Providence 49/61, Georgetown 57/24, St John's 63/32, Marquette 89/74, Butler 117/96, DePaul 119/26, Seton Hall 120/116.
Ken Pom Rankings: The BIG EAST has seven teams in the top 60. The ACC and Pac-12 (more teams) have eight, but the BIG EAST has as many as the Big 12 and Big Ten and more than the SEC and all other leagues.
NCAA Mock Brackets: Most of the major website brackets have the BIG EAST with five teams included. USA Today, CBSSports.com and Yahoo. The new ESPN Bracketology will be released on Thursday.
Depth: The BIG EAST has the smallest spread between the team ranked first and the team ranked last than any conference in the country except for the Big Ten, which is only slightly better.
