Reds have recalled OF/1B Donald Lutz from Triple-A Louisville and optioned 1B Neftali Soto. Lutz: 0-3, BB, SB last night, now 3 for 15 (.200) since promotion to Louisville. Lutz began the season at Class AA Pensacola and made 23 apps there (.360, 7 2b, 2 3b, 6hr, 16rbi, 1sb) before he was promoted on 5/17 to Louisville. Last season, Lutz made 34 apps for the Reds.

How about this screw-up that cost Milwaukee a game last night?

The Bench
Neftali Soto: 3 for 28 (.107) this year, 3 for 40 (.075) career.
0 BB, 13 K in 42 career plate appearances.
Roger Bernadina: 6 for 44 (.136) this year, .173 in last 143 games/305 PA
Ramon Santiago: 6 for 29 (.207) this year, .214 last 187 games.
Total: 15 for 101 (.148)

Can these '13 playoff teams turn around their '14 losing seasons?
What’s gone wrong? With the exception of third baseman Todd Frazier, everyone in the Reds’ lineup has been underperforming, hurt or both. As a result, Cincinnati has dropped from third-best in the NL in runs scored per game last year (4.3) to third-worst (3.6) this year. The bullpen hasn’t been helping, ranking dead last in the NL with a 5.00 ERA with seven blown saves and nine losses .

Starting at the top
The Sporting News ranks the MLB GM's
26th: Walt Jocketty
Building on a foundation of strong starting pitching is the way to go, but Jocketty (and ownership) have to take some heat for this past winter, when a playoff team that lost key contributors in Shin-Soo Choo and Bronson Arroyo to free agency did nothing to firm up its position in the National League Central. The Reds having only two regulars in their lineup with an OPS+ of better than the league-average 100 does not come as a surprise at all when it was clear that lineup depth was the missing piece, one that only got worse with Choo’s departure, and was not addressed.

St Louis Post Dispatch: Reliving a crummy Cardinals draft
The 2004 draft was one of several failures that triggered major changes in the Cardinals organization, including the ascension of Jeff Luhnow to player development czar in 2005 and the departure of Walt Jocketty as general manager in 2007.
