Final: Cubs 7 Reds 3 Boxscore
Well, so much for all my talk about the offense, starting pitching and defense: Reds managed 3 runs on 5 hits, committed an error and got poor starting pitching.
*I'd do a calculation of performances turned in by highest paid Reds Tuesday night, but it would be too depressing.
*Cubs SP Jake Arrieta retired first 18 batters, took perfect game to 7th, before Billy Hamilton singled to start the 7th.
*Reds cut 4-0 deficit to 4-2, but Joey Votto's error opened gates to 3 run 8th.
*It's not like Arrieto was some stiff coming in...1.91 ERA for season, and 3-0 with a 1.14 ERA in 5 June starts.
*Arrieta: 7 IN, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 9 K.......Arrieta's last 4 starts: 36/2 K/BB.
*Cubs move to 12-30 vs Reds in last 42 meetings.
*Homer Bailey was ineffective: 5.1, 4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 6 K, HR.
*Reds entered game having won 10 consecutive starts by Homer Bailey vs Cubs.
*53-minute rain delay to start.
*Hamilton extends hit streak to 12 in a row.
*Devin Mesoraco homered in his 5th straight game, longest in MLB this year, and tying a franchise record...#14.
*Other Reds with HR's in 5 straight games: Dunn, Bench, Griffey, Kluszewski, Crowe.
*Mesoraco 14 HR in 150 AB's.....1 every 10.7 AB.
*Mesoraco has hit in 7 in a row, driven in a run in 5 row.
*Mike Leake pinch ran (2x this year) for Brayan Pena in 8th.
*Reds had man on in 8th....Hamilton up after pitching change and he swings 1st pitch? Popped out.
*Cubs used 4 pitchers in 8th inning. Did Tony La Russa sneak into dugout?
*Great example why MLB should give teams timeouts to use, like NFL, NBA. Cubs made how many trips to mound...? Half inning w/ H/BB took 19-minutes.
*Votto errors in back to back games....0-4 and hitless in series.
*Joey Votto has not homered in 54 AB since coming off the DL and in 67 AB overall (May 10).
*Reds had allowed 15 unearned runs all season.....allowed 3 in the 8th inning.
*Jay Bruce 3 K and had trouble with a ball in RF.
*Reds hitters 11 K, 1 BB.
*Still a shot to win the series tonight with Mat Latos on mound.
*Bailey walked pitcher for 2nd consecutive game...Arrieta was leadoff batter in 6th.
*Bailey hit a batter w/bases loaded to force in run? Last start balked in run.
*Bailey's last 3 starts: 6.1, 5.2, 5.1 innings? ERA climbs to 4.80.
JJ Hoover, B6: .2, allowed 1 inherited runner to score
Jumbo Diaz, B7: 1-2-3 inning, 2 K, hitting 96 mph.

B6: Nate Scheirholtz SF, RBI, 4-0 Cubs
