Final: Brewers 4 Reds (Boxscore) Highlights HERE
*Well, you could see that one coming from a mile way.
*The Reds got a huge lift from Mat Latos who handed the bullpen a 1-0 lead, had to rally, and then watched a big one get away in a kick to the shin 4-2 loss to the Brewers. It was the first loss of the season when leading to start the 7th inning (28-1). Very revealing when the biggest game of the season ended with .158 hitting Roger Bernadina pinch-hitting as the final batter of the game.
*Huge game today: If the Reds lose, they'd lose the series and fall a season worst 9 games back.
*Mat Latos was outstanding: 6 IN, 2 H, 0 R, 5 K, 0 BB. He brings an attitude this team needs. Thom Brennaman described him as a "ferocious competitor". Bingo.
Latos cruised into the 6th, retiring 13 in a row. Gallardo hit a rocket to the warning track for an out, then it was that damn Scooter Gennet. His 13 pitch at-bat ended in a hit. Latos thought he didn't get the call on a check swing and again on a 3-2 pitch. He was ticked. Braun then crushed an out to the deepest part of the ballpark. Latos was clearly done after six. Line of the night for Fox analyst CJ Nitkowski: "It will now be interesting how this game plays out, Bryan Price will have to go to his bullpen an inning earlier than he'd like."
Bryan Price was boxed into a corner:
*Aroldis Chapman had pitched 3 straight days, 4 games in 6 days, 5 in 7 and 6 in 9.
*Jonathan Broxton had pitched Friday, after throwing 29 pitches on Wednesday.
*Sam LeCure had delivered 3 consecutive poor performances.
*So, Logan Ondrusek started the 7th: BB 1st batter, Gomez 2B, FO advanced runner, Davis RBI GO tied the game 1-1.
*Manny Parra followed: He never seems to have a clean inning. Wild pitch, then RBI 1B Rickie Weeks, 2-1 Brewers.
Billy Long Ball
*Billy Hamilton hit his 3rd HR of year in 8th to tie game 2-2. His first RH HR of the season and first allowed by Will Smith.
Well, that Hoovered
*JJ Hoover started the 8th....and it was that damn Gennet, again. He doubled. Then Ryan Braun homered, 4-2 Brewers. Nobody likes Hoover, so nobody will want to hear it, but the reality is, JJ had allowed just 3 runs in last 13 appearances: 17.1 IN, 9 H, 20 K, 1.56 ERA.
*Reds bullpen had 1.96 ERA in previous 24 games, 16 ER in last 73.1 innings.
*I would have liked to see Price get run in the 9th, standing up for his guys. Joey Votto was ticked after called strike three in 7th and Jay Bruce was miffed after called third strike in 9th. Price stood in dugout, shaking his head.
*Reds managed just 2 R, 7 H....while drawing just 2 BB to go with 11 K. It's the 22nd time they have scored 2 runs or fewer. Brandon Phillips lined a 2-out 1st inning 1B to plate Hamilton and Reds first run in the first inning. Phillips picked up Todd Frazier and Joey Votto, who failed to advance/plate Hamilton after a leadoff double. 2 hits: Hamilton, Phillips.
*Brandon Phillips has gone 30 consecutive plate appearances without a strikeout, Bill Hamilton 26 consecutive plate appearances. The last time each struck out was June 6.
*Billy Hamilton was picked off/caught stealing...8th time? Jay Bruce was thrown out stealing.
