Right elbow irritation for Latos -- no timetable for next rehab outing but not viewed as serious right now #reds— Mark Sheldon (@m_sheldon) April 8, 2014
Today the Reds returned from a rehabilitation assignment and reinstated from the 15-day disabled list RHP Jonathan Broxton (8/23/13 right forearm surgery). To make room on the 25-man roster, RHP Trevor Bell went on the 15-day DL with inflammation in his right elbow.
Latos pitched last Thursday at Double-A Pensacola: 4 IN, 7 H, 5 R.
He had elbow surgery in October and underwent surgery on a torn meniscus in his left knee on Feb. 14.
Word of the day: Aggravating
ST. LOUIS, MO - APRIL 7: Matt Holliday #7 of the St. Louis Cardinals hits an RBI double in the seventh inning against the Cincinnati Reds during the home opener at Busch Stadium on April 7, 2014 in St. Louis, Missouri. The Cardinals beat the Reds 5-3. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images)
Final: Cards 5 Reds 3
Reds drop to 2-5 on season......next up 8:15 Tuesday: Bailey vs Lynn.
T1: Billy Hamilton led off with his first hit of season....single to RF that he hustled into a double. BP bunted him to 3rd? Why give up an out to move fastest runner on planet 90 feet for best hitter on your team? Bad baseball. Votto grounded out, Hamilton was going on contact, got hung up, out between 3rd and home. Bruce K'd...0 runs.
If BP swings away and makes an out, you still have RISP, with Votto/Bruce due up.
B1: 31 pitches by Cingrani: 1B-1B-BB-K....then Molina hit 3-run double: 3-0 Cards. Cingrani had allowed just 4 earned runs in 1st inning of his first 19 starts.
T2: Cozart ground out....0-20..ties career high. Longest Reds streak to begin a season since Corky Miller went 0-29, 2004.
B2: Cingrani 21 pitch inning.....52 after 2.
T3: Pena 2B, Cingrani infield 1B, Hamilton pop up SS, BP DP.
T4: Votto leadoff BB, Bruce K, Ludwick FO, Frazier GO.
B4: Peralta BB, Votto error on grounder, Wacha sac bunt, Carpenter K
T5: Cozart FO (0 for 21)Pena 2B, Bernadina PH RBI 2B, 3-1. Wacha's career scoreless streak vs Reds ends at 21 innings. Billy ground out
Cingrani done: 4 IN, 3 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 5 K, 88 pitches/46 strikes. Cingrani still riding ML record streak of 20 straight starts to begin a career without allowing more than 5 hits.
T6: Votto ground out softly to pitcher/check swing, Bruce GO, Ludwick 1B, Frazier FO.
T7: Cozart GO (0 for 22), Pena 3rd hit, 1B, Heisey K, Hamilton up, Pena caught stealing to end inning, vs Molina, with tying run at plate? (missed hit/run sign?)
Bullpen: Nick Christiani, 2 IN, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB
B7: Trevor Bell? Down 2, with 2 more AB's and trying to hold the fort, Bell is the option? He allowed RBI 2B Holliday 4-1, RBI 1B Craig 5-1. No LeCure?
Bell's line: .2, 4 H, 2 R....replaced by Partch. Bell's ERA dropped from infinity to 67.50.
T9: vs Rosenthal, Bruce BB, Ludwick BB, Frazier 1B, Cozart breaks 0 for 22 with RBI 1B, 5-2, K Pena, PH Soto SF, 5-3, Hamilton FO....ball game.
Billy got a hit, Cozart broke 0 for 22, Reds scored for 1st time in 21 innings vs Wacha, Ludwick extended hit streak, Christiani 2 scoreless innings, Reds scored 2 in 9th vs excellent closer, bench provided PH RBI 2B and PH SF RBI.
Bad baseball, bad managing.
No hitting in clutch. Poor fundamentals. 2-3-4 in order 0 for 9.
No idea why Phillips bunt in 1st.
No idea why you use Bell in a 3-1 game
No idea why Pena was attempting to steal n 7th, with tying run at plate, vs Molina....there is aggressive and then there is stupid.
No idea why Price loves the "on contact play"....Cards were playing in with Hamilton on 3rd. Make the ball go through!
Cards best March/April record in NL since 2000 (.587), 2nd best ML to Boston (.592).
Hits: Hamilton 1, Ludwick 2, Pena 3, Cingrani 1, Bernadina 1, Cozart
Doubles: Hamilton, Pena 2, Bernadina
WP: Wacha, 6 IN, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K
LP: Cingrani, 4 IN, 3 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 5 K
Reds issued 6 walks
Ludwick extends hit streak to 5 games
Reds w/RISP: 4 for 12
LeCure is 11th on staff in innings pitched, with one inning this year.
I wondered about Mesoraco not PH in 9th with bases loaded, instead of Soto.
Soto 0-13 ML career, although a hot hitter in spring, and he did ultimately lift a SF.
Bad weather might have scared Price off of using Mez. But if that is case, why active Mez before game?
