Last week, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced that the Pentagon changed its long standing policy against women in combat roles. The branches have until mid-May to come up with a plan on how to implement these changes. The signed directive will open front-line posts to the approximately 200,000 women now serving in the active duty military. Prior the signing of the directive, women were precluded from specialities such as armor, artillery and infantry since 1994.
GOOD IDEA? I don't think so...
Don't get me wrong, I am all for women serving in whatever capacity they desire in the military. HOWEVER, I am firmly against any social expirement that would undermine any aspect of our military's effectiveness. In no way am I saying that my opinion is a reflection on a female military member's courage, fitness or ability to do the job. Rather, it is more a reflection of how our country views women. Do you really believe for one minute if a female military member is captured, tortured, mutiliated, AND all of this is broadcasted via the web, our country wouldn't demand we send in Seal Team Six to rescue her?? Until our country devalues women's lives to the same level we do our male counterparts we are simply placing a LARGE TARGET on every woman who wants to serve on the front lines.
Harsh? Yes, but that is reality.
