( Walton ) ** Update 11-17-12, 9:35pm ** On Saturday, the board that oversees the Boone County Water District voted to suspend Phil Trzop indefinitely from his job as general manager. Trzop is currently free on bond after being arrested on Friday.
The General Manager of the Boone County Water District has been charged with abuse of public trust and is being held on $50,000 cash bond at the Boone County Jail. Investigators say 62-year-old Phil Trzop, who was also just elected as mayor of Walton, is responsible for $34,000 in mishandled money at the Water District.
An investigation began when the Water District Board sent out surveys to employees to gauge morale and several noted the sale of scrap metal that was then used for employee bonuses. The Boone County Sheriff's office says Trzop then admitted to having some of the missing money at his home.
Chairman Charlie Cain says Trzop had just celebrated being with the department for 20 years on Friday, the day he was arrested. Abuse of public trust is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
