(Hamilton Co.) Back in 1996 Hamilton County Comissioners raised the sales tax to pay for the new Bengals and Reds stadiums with a deal for property owners promising them a break on property tax rates. Now revenues have fallen about $7 million short of covering expenses and the deficit is expected to keep growing. County Comissioner Todd Portune has proposed raising the sales tax a quarter-percent for 10-years to 6.75 percent and wants to continue the property tax cuts. Meanwhile, Comissioner Greg Hartman is proposing erasing half-the property tax cuts. Comissioners will vote on the proposals today.
Update: Comissioners voted to raise property tax.Comissioner Greg Hartman and Chris Monzel voted to rollback the property tax cuts. Monzel says they can reduce other property taxes in a few years. Property owners will pay about $35.00 more per $100,000 valuation of their homes.
