(Kettering, Ohio) A soldier from the South Dayton area was reported killed in Afghanistan Sunday. The Department of Defense announced 37-year-old Chief Warrant Officer James E. Groves III of Kettering died in a helicopter crash Saturday in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division Hunter Army Airfield, Ga. The Defense Department reports his death is under investigation. Groves was a 1994 graduate of Kettering Fairmont High School. A family member says he was a year from retirement. He leaves behind a wife and two small children.
