Growing up in South Lake Tahoe, CA, Matt Buyten started riding dirt bikes at age 11, with much credit coming from his dad encouraging him to cross over from BMX dirt jumping to freestyle motocross (FMX). It was a successful move for Buyten, who is now 32 years old and has competed and earned medals in multiple X Games events - winning four gold and two silver medals in the Step Up competition. In 2011, Buyten literally raised the bar in Step Up as he broke the standing 11-year-old X Games record of 10.5m to a new record of 11m. Buyten is one of the returning veterans of the Nuclear Cowboyz, having performed with the tour for three years.
