You mayyyy have noticed that Abercrombie brands don't carry sizes for plus size people. So it may come as to no surprise that the CEO is not so fond of overweight people. He actually says that they will never become a part of the "in" crowd.
What a great message to teach our youth!
For example, the largest woman's pant size at A&F is a 10. But H&M goes up to a 16 and competitor American Eagle goes up to an 18.
Amercrombie's ideologies stem right from their CEO, Mike Jeffries. Robin Lewis, author of The New Rules of Retail says this about Jeffries. AND I QUOTE. “He doesn’t want larger people shopping in his store, he wants thin and beautiful people,” Lewis said. “He doesn’t want his core customers to see people who aren’t as hot as them wearing his clothing. People who wear his clothing should feel like they’re one of the ‘cool kids.’”
Lewis also says that the only reason A&F offers XL and XXL in men's sizes is to appeal to large beefy athletes. Not to be sexist or anything...
Once in 2006, Jeffries was interviewed by Salon and talked about why the brand only hires "hot people."
“It’s almost everything. That’s why we hire good-looking people in our stores. Because good-looking people attract other good-looking people, and we want to market to cool, good-looking people. We don’t market to anyone other than that,” he said.
He's another great snippet:
“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids,” he told the site. “Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely. Those companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny. But then you become totally vanilla. You don’t alienate anybody, but you don’t excite anybody, either,” he told Salon.
