(Cincinnati, Oh.)--The Cincinnati Zoo is working frantically to keep a premature baby Hippo alive.

Michelle Curley the Communications Director at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden says the veterinary staff and Nursery staff are give the baby critical care. The baby Nile Hippo was born around 3 a.m. Tuesday morning to first time mother Bibi. She is the first Nile Hippo born at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden in over 75 years.

Curley says, they confirmed Bibi's pregnancy earlier this month via ultra sound and "we weren't expecting the baby until March." The baby Nile hippo weighs 29 pounds, normal weight is between 55 and 100 pounds.Curley says, the baby Hippo has been separated from her mother because "she was to weak to stand."

She adds the zoo staff are "watching her carefully and giving her the best care that we can, hoping that she makes it."
