Vigils Held For Fallen Officers as Police Shooting Suspect Charged

(Columbus, Oh.)--Flags are at half-staff Monday after two police officers were killed in the line of duty following a weekend shooting outside Columbus.  

Westerville Police Officers Anthony Morelli and Eric Joering were responding Saturday to a 911 hang-up call related to a domestic dispute and were met with gunfire. One officer was killed on the scene and the other died at an area hospital from his injuries. 

The man responsible for the shooting has been identified as 30-year-old Quentin Smith. He was shot as well and was hospitalized in critical condition. 

Smith has been charged with two counts of aggravated murder and is set for a court appearance today Police previously went to the town-home where Smith lives with his wife and daughter on domestic violence calls last September and November, no arrests were made at that time.

Funeral services are being planned for the two police officers.

Westerville residents rallyed behind the families, friends and colleagues of two fallen police officers.  A church service and community gathering were held yesterday to remember the officers.

Meantime, residents have turned Morelli's cruiser into a makeshift memorial with flowers, balloons and candles. 

President Trump also took notice of the tragic deaths, the president tweeted his condolences yesterday to the community and families of the officers.

Governor John Kasich says the president called him directly to express his sadness over the officer's murders this past weekend.
