Boone County Sheriff ID's Suspect in Deputy-Involved Shooting

( Verona, Kentucky ) - The Boone County Sheriff is still searching for a suspect who allegedly fought with deputies at a gas station early Monday morning.

The sheriff says 32-year-old David Vaughn, recently of Florence, was found in a car at the Verona Marathon station on Verona-Mudlick Road just after 1am Monday. Deputies were initially called on reports of a suspicious person in a car who had been there for an inordinate amount of time. When they ordered Vaughn out of the car, he allegedly fought with them, pushed them away, and got back into the car. The sheriff says one deputy tried to use a taser, and the other deputy fired his gun, striking the car. That car has since been found abandoned in Indiana, and Vaughn is still at large.

The responding deputies have been identified as 36-year-old Bruce Fields, a 12-year veteran in law enforcement, and 46-year-old Lt Dan Stephens, a 23-year veteran of law enforcement (pictured below). The sheriff says Fields was the initial responding deputy.

A statement from the sheriff says Deputy Fields is on administrative duty and Lt Stephens is on light duty following injuries he suffered during the alleged struggle with Vaughn.

Investigators are still looking for David Vaughn. If you can help police, call CrimeStoppers at 513-352-3040 or text CINTIP plus your message to CRIMES.
