(Cincinnati, OH) - Marian Spencer led the effort to desegregate swimming pools at Cincinnati's Coney Island back in the 1950's. And she later became the city's first African-American woman to become a member of Cincinnati City Council in 1983. Spencer has died in Cincinnati at the age of 99.

Spencer had recently suffered a stroke on her birthday this past June 28th.

Former city council member Tyrone Yates, who is currently a Hamilton County Municipal Court judge, tells Newsradio 700 WLW that Spencer "was a great citizen, an icon in Cincinnati's history." Yates says Spencer was a straight-A student in high school in Gallipolis, Ohio and also at the University of Cincinnati in the 1940's.
