Chief: Man Pointed Gun at Officer before Shooting

( Avondale ) - The above image was posted by Cincinnati Police on Twitter just moments after reports of a gunshot from a police officer in Avondale just before noon on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Chief Eliot Isaac held a news conference to review the police details of what happened.

The chief says it started with an undercover officer in an unmarked car along Blair Ave reporting that he saw a man take a gun from his pocket and put it in his waistband. That undercover officer broadcast a description of the individual, and uniformed Officer Mark Schildmeyer rolled up not long after.

Officer Schildmeyer got out and gave the man multiple orders to show his hands. Chief Isaac says the man had his left hand behind his back, and eventually removed his left hand from behind his back, and pointed his gun at Officer Schildmeyer. That's when Schildmeyer ordered the man to drop his gun, and he then fired one round, striking the man in his torso. Schildmeyer then called for an ambulance.

The man shot has been identified as 20-year-old Vernell Jackson (pictured, top). He was taken to UC Medical Center where he underwent surgery. Chief Isaac says he's currently in critical, but stable condition.

The chief says the entire incident was captured on Officer Schildmeyer's body cam, and that footage will be released once the Hamilton County Prosecutor gives the green light.

Chief Isaac says there's been an increased police presence in Avondale following recent violent crime. Just the night before, a woman was killed while sitting in her apartment.
